More children’s book illustration work

The certain way to get a child interested in reading, something very important in this rapidly changing digital age, is to spark their imaginations. And how better to do that than with high quality, engaging visual material?

My style focuses on a lot of detail, things for the eye to simply wander and explore. I also use a lot of warm, vibrant colour and texture that gives the essence of analogue while still allowing for the benefits in production with digital software. While a child’s reading skills grow with the help of books, illustrations can still provide a story and message that they otherwise are still learning to understand.

I studied Fine Arts with a minor in Illustration at NSCAD University, where I received the Arthur Lismer Award, and in 2024 ImagineFX featured my work in print through one of their community art challenges.

For publishers and art directors: I can work with any schedule and standard practices specific for in-house. I can supply assets for usage within InDesign, and collaborate with other members in the production a book.

For authors publishing their own book: we can work together to decide on a schedule and budget that works best for you, and gets your ideas out into the world. Your stories deserve good quality illustrations, and I can provide them.

Whether you only have just an idea for now or your finished manuscript awaiting publishing, we can collaborate together to create an engaging book for readers of all ages.

Common questions

Do you work with self-publishing authors as well as publishers?

Yes. If this is your first book, I am happy to work closely together with you to determine the best way forward in realizing your project and bring insight into printing formats, typeface, and more.

How long does a picture book take?

It depends on the page count. Each page spread can be treated as a singular illustration, even for non-double spread illustration (illustration that is fully printed on two pages rather than one). For any illustration, my standard deadline is 2 weeks. This can be further or shorter depending on complexity. Sending me a full manuscript is the best way to determine this, and standardly this would be 4-6 months on a 32 page-count book.

What does a full picture book project include?

Typically thirty two pages of interiors plus the cover. Additional character and style tests also go through, as well as some basic colour ranges for a unified look. You approve the rough before rendering, and updates are sent almost daily or can be scheduled accordingly.

Can you keep characters consistent across a whole book?

Yes. Before the first spread, I make character and style tests and a colour range for the book, and every spread is painted from those references, so your character looks like the same child on page one and on page thirty two.

Who owns the illustrations?

I keep the copyright and you licence the uses we agree, which is standard arrangement in publishing.

How do I find and hire a children's book illustrator?

Looking through portfolios is the right first step. If my work feels right for your story, send me a brief with your manuscript or idea, your page count and rough timing. I reply within one business day with questions, a quote and a schedule, and the project begins once everything is agreed. Asking costs you nothing.

How much does it cost to illustrate a children's book?

Full picture books usually land between $4,000 and $12,000 CAD, depending on page count, how many characters and spreads there are, and which rights you need. Single illustrations start around $400 and covers from $800. Every quote names its usage rights in plain words, so you always know what you are buying.
