The making of this piece

More from the collection

Whether for a pitch or a production in progress, I can help visualize worlds for the screen and beyond. Concept art, environment, background paintings, colour keys, character/prop designs, promotional work, etc. If you need visuals, I can visualize them. Attention to realism in terms of costume or weaponry can be brought in as I often do research before conceptualizing, though the rules can always be broken as well.

I am open to freelance contracts and to in-studio work, remote or on site (later would be preferably in Canada, but I am potentially open to opportunities abroad). Currently I am based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but have ties to Vancouver, British Columbia.

NDA’s are expected, full confidentiality is promised. My rates are also adaptable, and can be adjusted accordingly depending on budget and size of production. Whether you’re with a studio or an individual looking to start something incredible, I can help you out.

If you are staffing a production, scoping a pitch, or looking for one design that sets a direction, the brief below reaches me directly and I reply within one business day. For studio roles, a note with the position and the timeline is enough; I will send a portfolio and CV shaped to what you are building. I am also very open to style tests if need-be to ensure I’ll be a good fit for your project at a reduced rate.

Common questions

Are you available for in-studio positions or only freelance?

Both. I am open to freelance contracts and to in-studio roles, remote or on site. I am currently open to in-house work in Canada, and remote work around the globe.

Where do you fit in a production pipeline?

Visual development and design: characters, props, locations, colour, and mood. Accommodations can be made medium and style as well. I do not have experience as an animator, but have done research into the pipeline to understand it's restrictions and methods.

How do you handle notes and revisions?

Notes and revisions are always very expectant for concept and design work, making it a collaboration between visionary/writer and artist, as well as any other team members. I send many updates during the work's progress, and usually anything can be changed at any point. Visual reference material for the project is also greatly appreciated, and typically works the best for clearest communication. With that being said, revisions can extend the timeline of a project, especially with the nature of remote communication. For freelance roles, we can discuss the amount of revisions into the commission. There is no limit towards them, but excessive requests for revisions may result in requiring the deadline to be extended. A forewarning will be provided if that's the case, though this is rare and I can usually handle many changes at once. Additionally, if an update/revision on a project goes for 48 business hours without a response, that can also result 1 additional day being added for every 24 hours after that point.

Can we see work you have done for other productions?

Any work that is no longer an NDA can be sent, and is usually available to preview on my website. I can also discuss my time with other productions and projects further with you.

What software do you work in?

I work digitally, mainly in Clip Studio Paint, and I can deliver layered files that open cleanly in Photoshop. If your pipeline needs something specific, ask, and I will give you an honest answer about whether I can fit it. I'm also open to working other programs such as the Adobe Creative Cloud if required as I have previous experience with it, it's just not a program I'm always subscribed too.

What is the usual timeline for your work?

It depends on what's being asked, and the project. Usually, it's the concepting and rough stage that actually takes the most time, along with revisions. The final deliverable is more straightforward. For character/prop designs, promotional artwork, and visual development work is at a standard of 2 weeks. Background illustrations can usually be done faster so long as there is pre-existing design material from storyboards or concept art, typically within 1 week. However, 2 weeks is recommended regardless, and deliverables are usually available before the deadline itself. Development work with in-studio is typically more adaptive, and I can also work to other schedules depending on the production pipeline as well. Have a tight deadline for your project? Need something done fast yet still be of high-quality? An emergency of a missing asset or a sudden revision? I can work with that too. The animation world is fast-paced and competitive, I can keep up.
